GLTPA NEWS LETTER

GLTPA FINALS NEWSLETTER INFORMATION 2008

Team Penning and Sorting for everybody.

The 3rd annual Great Lakes Team Penning Finals are here.  We have been blessed with getting an awesome facility for our Team Penning Friends.  Michigan State University is the place to be October 31, at 5:00PM.  We will kick the night off with our Top 30 penning class.    If you are in the top 30 and can’t make it on Friday night please contact me so I can move down the list.  Each top 10 person will draw two names making their three man team.  All 10 teams will then compete in penning on Friday and then sort on Sunday.  Points will be given for each team that receives a time.  The top two teams with the most points will win a portion of the $500.00.  Don’t forget about the Calcutta.  Anybody can purchase teams and the payback is great!

Stall reservations are due by October 20th.  $55.00 per stall.  One horse per stall.  Please get them in so I can give MSU a count.  $15.00 fee per day for those who do not purchase a stall.   Also, camping is available for $13.00 per night. Please also mail your camping money with your stall reservations.  Payable to GLTPA 5691 Rich Rd, Alma. Mi.  48801

I want to THANK EVERYBODY for your continued support throughout the past 8 years.  Especially all of you that help run shows, put on shows, and behind the scene work.  I hope we can keep this great sport alive.  I’m willing to make changes to make you happy.  I had heard that there was some interest in the 3-D events, so I’m excited to try it to give penner's a variety.  Please understand I’m doing this to try and keep the sport growing.  If you have any constructive thoughts on this issue would you please email me or give me a call.  I have heard some great positive responses.  I do realize there are also people out there that may not agree with the way shows are run, ratings, etc…...  Please just remember, all we are trying to do it provide a place for you to pen and hang out with your friends.  Friend’s that share a common interest.  J

Back to the good part…. We have $5,000.00 added in money and prizes.   If you are a member before the finals start and have attended two shows you are qualified to run for that $5,000.00. Plus 50% of the jackpot. If you choose not to become a member and have not been to two shows you still have a chance at $1,000.00 added. Plus 50% payback and a great time with all of us.   So, GLTPA members, here is your chance to spread the word.  Anybody that brings in a new team penner will have his or her name put into a draw pot. You will have a chance at winning a GLTPA jacket.

Please don’t forget to think of a most improved person.  And also, a person that you think is very sportsmanlike.

Bring your Halloween costume for Saturday night. After the show, we will have a pre party and Calcutta at the Pavilion.  If you wish you may join us after the Calcutta, at the Whiskey Barrel for Bull Ridding and entertainment.

MSU will have a concession stand open Friday, through Sunday.   Please keep your dogs on a leash.

I’m really looking forward to a GREAT 2008 Show at MSU.  I hope all of you can join us and enjoy the fun.

"THREE"

He walks in with great confidence, looks at the cows along the fence.

They are all bunched up just right, in the middle but not too tight.

He can only trust the partner on his back; will put him on the cows he must track.

They have an advantage and know what they must do; the only set that remains is the number two.

The flag drops and they hear the call, Number two. Look there all three on the wall.

His rider, his partner, puts him in place; off they go at the amazing pace.

He makes his move and takes them clean; the cows take off with a head of steam.

He works them and drives them down the pen, wondering if they will stop and try him again.

They round the wing and head for the gate, they have made it this far, but for them it’s too late.

All his friends have done their job, and three horses close in, they came together and once again, put all THREE in the pen.

WORD OF THE MONTH

Practice = you only get better by having patience and practice.  Practice makes perfect.  The more you practice and even watch others practice, the better you become at what ever life brings your way. So don't forget to practice!

CONGRATS! THE TWINS HAVE ARRIVED!

Chad and Nicole Elliot had twins on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at 4:49 and 4:50pm.  They had one boy and one girl and named them Tyler and Addison.  Tyler weighed 5' 11 oz and 18 inches long and Addison weighed 5' 3 oz and 18 inches long.  Babies, Mom and Dad are all doing well.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT...A NEW ARRIVAL ON THE WAY!

Karl Lanka and his wife are expecting a baby in September. Congratulations to the Lanka family from your horse friends!  Keep us updated on your new arrival.

MEET THE RIDER

Time to meet more riders! This time we are honored to have Pat and Clyde Shaffner answer a few of our questions.  Pat is a new rider but only on the trails, she has a horse that Clyde does ride occasionally penning and sorting, she prefers to sit on the side lines, taking pictures and helping out in the announcer’s booth.  Clyde has been penning and sorting since 1994, he is a retired farmer but still helps out on the farm with their sons.  Pat has been a stay at home mother, which is still a fulltime job. She helps out around the farm and does the bookkeeping.  They now enjoy retirement in Texas 6-8 weeks in January or February every year, where they team pen and have other great horse friends.  They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren, one of which we know very well, Sarah Ivan who is their oldest grandchild, the entire family lives only 3 miles apart.  When asked about giving advice to new penners and sorters they responded by saying “Make having fun your first objective”, which is true, and when asked for any suggestions for GLTPA future, they are kind of hoping for a 60 year old and over class!!

 SHOW & PRACTICE UPDATES

Spurbar Ranch (Skip & Wendy Koubek) have halted their practices on Saturdays, once we have a set date for them to start up again we will let you know!

BarJR Ranch plan on to continuing the Sunday practices at 2 pm, however, keep in mind the remaining shows are two day shows, so the Sunday practices are cancelled due to shows, that would include August 9th & 10th. Call the ranch to confirm if practice is being held!

NEW YOUTH INCENTIVE CLASSES OFFERED

News worthy, GLTPA is offering youth penning and 2 man sorting incentive rides at the end of each show, Saturdays they offer a youth penning class $5 per rider, and in 2 man sorting on Sundays during the #3 class, again $5 per rider.  Rules are that the youth rider must be under 16 years old as of January 1, 2008 season and have less than 2 years experience; they are allowed to ride with any adult/adults.  The exception is that the youth rider is the only one allowed in the herd if riding with adult/adults.  Any youth under 16 years old can ride regardless of rating, if any one rider has over 2 years experience, the entire team needs to be all youth 16 years old and under.
